Online Outreach for HIV Prevention in NYC

In February 2016, Antón Castellanos Usigli started an innovative online outreach strategy to recruit men who have sex with men (MSM) for HIV/STIs prevention services through hookup/dating apps at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY. In one month, Antón was able to bring more than 20 new clients into the clinic for services such as sexual health counseling, HIV/STIs testing and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). Antón then standardized this method of outreach for the peer educators of the program to do it on a regular basis. In little over a year, more than 100 new clients came into the clinic. In November 2017, Antón presented the results of the first year of this online outreach strategy in Brooklyn at the Conference of the American Public Health Association. He has also been invited to talk about this strategy on many occasions by the NYC and the NYS Departments of Health, in front of dozens of HIV prevention agencies from New York. Some of these agencies have began replicating this online outreach strategy to engage MSM for HIV/STIs prevention services. The Guardian and Vox featured Antón's work in this area.
